The Shop on Main Street (1965)

Czechoslovakia 126m, B&W
Director: Ján Kadár & Elmar Klos; Cast: Jozef Kroner, Anton “Tóno” Brtko, Ida Kamińska Rozália Lautmannová, Hana Slivková, Evelína Brtková, Martin Hollý Sr., Imrich Kuchár

shop_on_main_streetIn a misguided effort to please his family, a poor Slovakian carpenter named Tono reluctantly takes over the “management” of a run down button shop from an elderly Jewish store owner during WWII. While complicit in the totalitarian regime’s plans to Aryanize the country, Tono lets Mrs. Lautmann believe that he is her new assistant, in return for payment from the Jewish community. The film’s expected conclusion is further darkened when the old woman finally realizes what is happening to her town in this tragic drama (Klaus Ming January 2015).
