Jaws (1975)

US 124m, Colour
Director: Steven Spielberg; Cast: Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss

Jaws_1975Jaws remains one of the biggest commercial successes of all time, and often copied, parodied, and still referenced in popular culture and loosely adapted from Moby-Dick. This shark hunt is a bonafide thriller, at least up until the film’s animatronic star is given its close-up. Despite the technical limitations of the day, the film’s success at building tension is as much due to John Williams’ “duh duh, duh duh, duh duh” theme music as anything else. A cultural phenomenon, Jaws defined the summer Hollywood blockbuster, not to mention an increased public fear of shark attacks (Klaus Ming January 2015).
