Viridiana (1961)

Spain/Mexico 90m, B&W
Director: Luis Buñuel; Cast: Silvia Pinal, Francisco Rabal, Fernando Rey, Margarita Lozano

ViridianaViridiana was an outrageous film for its time and was subsequently banned by the Spanish government for blasphemy and obscenity. A young nun is coerced by Mother Superior to visit her uncle, a rich benefactor, only to be drugged and molested while unconscious after refusing his proposal for marriage. Convinced that she must leave the church, Viridiana’s beliefs are again tested when her cousin takes up residence. Through his satirical treatment of these otherwise serious events, Buñuel’s commentary on the Catholic Church and the Spanish upper class is that much more subversive (Klaus Ming January 2015).
