Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance (2014)

US 119m, Colour
Director: Alejandro G. Iñárritu; Cast: Michael Keaton, Zach Galifianakis, Edward Norton, Andrea Riseborough, Amy Ryan, Emma Stone, Naomi Watts

birdmanBirdman is a surreal fictional story of an aging Hollywood comic book action hero who attempts a comeback on Broadway by writing, directing and starring in a dramatic play that seems destined for failure. Visited by the voice of his former self, Birdman is filled with self-loathing and doubt as he risks everything to regain the fame that destroyed his family life. In casting Keaton as Birdman, the former Batman star steps into a role that mimics his own career, and comments on both film and stage as art form. Brilliantly filmed in what is intended to look like a single continuous shot, Iñárritu creates a documentary-like look and feel which literally and figuratively explores the world of Broadway through a Hollywood lens (Klaus Ming February 2015).
