Whiplash (2014)

US 106m, Colour
Director: Damien Chazelle; Cast: Miles Teller, J. K. Simmons, Paul Reiser, Melissa Benoist, Austin Stowell

WhiplashimgA high energy drama about an aspiring jazz drummer who is pushed beyond his limits by a tyrannical instructor whose motivational techniques are physically and psychologically abusive. The story is unpredictable, edgy and relentlessly interesting, as is the filming of the musical performances which builds in its intensity through camera movement and editing. Musically, Whiplash is surprisingly inspirational and wholly enjoyable, even for those of us who have never appreciated a lengthy drum solo (Klaus MIng February 2015).

Teller and Simmons allow for these characters to feel like actual human beings and not just certain types. Good review Klaus.

Thanks, and yes indeed they do. I really liked Teller’s performance.
