Born: Frank James Cooper
May 7, 1901
Successful in both the silent and sound eras, Gary Cooper starred in eighty-four feature films. Arguably, his earliest and most noticeable appearance was his small supporting role in Wings (1927), which was a film that had both critical acclaim and box office success. Known for his natural performances, he was nominated for five Academy Awards for Best Actor, and won twice, for Sergeant York and High Noon. Including Sergeant York (1941) and High Noon (1952), four of his films appear on the 1001 list, including Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936) and Man of the West (1958) (Klaus Ming February 2015).
