City for Conquest (1940)

US 104m, B&W
Director: Anatole Litvak; Cast: James Cagney, Ann Sheridan, Arthur Kennedy, Frank Craven, Anthony Quinn, Elia Kazan

city-for-conquestCombining music, dance, boxing and romance, City for Conquest is an entertaining melodrama about a Danny Kenny, a New York City truck driver who’s afraid that he’s going to lose his gal Peggy to a career as a professional dancer. Dusting off his Golden Gloves to become a pro boxer, Danny seems destined to become champion and win back Peggy’s affections. Cagney is terrific as the romantic lead who risks it all for family and his childhood sweetheart (Klaus Ming February 2015).
