Nightcrawler (2014)

US 117m, Colour
Director: Dan Gilroy; Cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Riz Ahmed, Bill Paxton

nightcrawlerEasily the most entertaining movie of 2014, Nightcrawler is about Louis “Lou” Bloom, a petty thief turned freelance news videographer whose moral compass is guided by profit and self-interest. A quick learner, Lou impresses a local news director with footage that he shoots after unlawfully manipulating crime scenes. In his orchestration of the “news” events, subsequent to a deadly home invasion, Lou gambles everything on an exclusive that will win him the acclaim that he feels he deserves. Overlooked by the Academy in 2015, Gyllenhaal’s Oscar-worthy performance was one of the best of the year, as was Gilroy’s directorial debut (Klaus Ming February 2015).

Good review Klaus. It’s all because of Gyllenhaal that this movie is as creepy as it is.

He is a standout for sure, but it’s also a well put together movie – from the writing, editing and direction. Though not the most spectacular car chases in film history, it was one of the most intense.
