Les Glaneurs et la Glaneuse (2000)

France 82m, Colour
Director: Agnès Varda; Cast: Bodan Litnanski, François Wertheimer, Agnès Varda

gleanersThe Gleaners and I is a documentary about collecting “after the harvest” or in the case of urban environments from waste bins or off the streets after the market closes. Often practiced by the poor, the act of gleaning has a long tradition that has taken on a variety of forms that go beyond food to include the collection and salvage of disused objects by second-hand dealers, artists, collectors and environmentalists. A fascinating and thoughtful film, the act and art of gleaning is alive and perhaps even more relevant in an increasingly wasteful society (Klaus Ming February 2015).
