Wild (2014)

US 115m, Colour
Director: Jean-Marc Vallée; Cast: Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Thomas Sadoski, Michiel Huisman, Gaby Hoffmann

wild_2014Wild is the story of Cheryl Strayed, a woman who embarks on an eleven hundred mile hike along the Pacific Coast Trail as a way to heal the emotional trauma she had suffered throughout her life, including the death of her mother, random relationships, divorce, and drug use. Intended as a motivational story, the film highlights her continued lack of common sense by way of her unpreparedness for the journey, and the many potentially life-threatening situations which she continues to stumble into. Perhaps lucky to survive, the story of her journey seems somewhat disingenuous, if not a little annoying, leaving me wondering if this even needed to be made into a film (Klaus Ming February 2015).

Good review Klaus. We haven’t seen Witherspoon do something quite like this before, and because of that, the movie’s quite a compelling watch.
