The Judge is combination courtroom and family drama about the relationship between a recently widowed father with terminal cancer, and his estranged son who returns home for his mother’s funeral, only to learn that his father has been charged with murder. The film’s relatively complex plot, seems only to scratch the surface of the character’s motivations in what should have been a profoundly moving drama. As principal characters, Duvall and Downey have a chemistry as father and son, however neither character is particularly likable, which also makes it difficult to develop much sympathy for either of them (Klaus Ming February 2015).
