Man of the West (1958)

US 100m, Colour
Director: Anthony Mann; Cast: Gary Cooper, Julie London, Lee J. Cobb, Arthur O’Connell

man-of-the-westMan of the West examines the true character of it’s title character, played by an aging Gary Cooper, who is perfect as the reformed bandit turned respectable citizen. Victim of a robbery while travelling by train to Fort Worth, the seemingly shy and reserved Link Jones loses a small sum of money that was entrusted to him to secure the services of a school teacher for his town. Link’s true identity, and his colourful past are revealed when he and two of his fellow passengers are forced to walk to the next town and stumble upon the robber’s hideout. As the film’s anti-hero, Link must return to his murderous ways if he hopes to live out his life as a reformed man (Klaus Ming February 2015).
