The Defiant Ones (1958)

US 97m, B&W
Director: Stanley Kramer; Cast: Tony Curtis, Sidney Poitier, Theodore Bikel, Cara Williams, Charles McGraw, Lon Chaney, Jr.

the_defiant_onesThe Defiant Ones is a well-written and intelligent drama about two prisoners who are chained together, and who are on the run after the prison truck that was transporting them runs off the road. Forced to work together to stay one step ahead of the law, the racial tensions of 1950s America are explored in this socially conscious action adventure. Poitier and Curtis deliver strong natural performances as the fugitives who eventually develop a personal relationship that allows them to move past their racially motivated hostility for one another (Klaus Ming February 2015).
