Manhunter (1986)

US 124m, Colour
Director: Michael Mann; Cast: William Petersen, Kim Greist, Joan Allen, Brian Cox, Dennis Farina, Stephen Lang, Tom Noonan

manhunterManhunter is based on the disturbing 1981 Thomas Harris novel Red Dragon, but is better known through later adaptations as Silence of the Lambs (1991), Hannibal (2001) and Red Dragon (2002). A highly stylized production that initially was criticized for its contemporary electronic soundtrack and pop music video-like sensibilities, Manhunter has in recent years been appreciated for these very “faults”. Looking like a television episode of CSI or Millenium, for which Manhunter certainly inspired, the film’s underlying strength is in its portrayal of the dangers of getting into the head of a serial killer (Klaus Ming March 2015).

Mann’s style sometimes doesn’t work for me, but here, I was more than willing to make the exception. Nice review Klaus.

The 80s pop music video style of this film somehow works for it now. Creepy as hell!
