Suspense (1913)

US 10m, Silent, B&W
Directors: Lois Weber & Phillips Smalley; Cast: Lois Weber, Valentine Paul, Douglas Gerrard, Sam Kaufman

suspense_1913Suspense is a credible one reel thriller about a woman with a baby in her arms who has alerted her husband by telephone of an intruder in their house. As the husband races home in a stolen automobile, with the police in chase, an evil intentioned tramp armed with a carving knife makes his way through their house, leaving the audience wondering what will happen. A technically innovative film that was ahead of its time, Weber and Smalley utilize a three split screen technique, extreme close-ups, unusual camera angles and fast paced editing to heighten the drama, fear and intensity of the action (Klaus Ming March 2015).
