Gegen die Wand (2004)

Germany, Turkey 121m, Colour
Director: Fatih Akın; Cast: Birol Ünel, Sibel Kekilli, Catrin Striebeck, Meltem Cumbul

Gegen die WandGegen die Wand is an unusual and deeply emotional love story about a middle-aged Turkish man living in Germany who is depressed and disillusioned after the death of his wife. Surviving an intentional head on crash, Cahit Tomruk ends up at a psychiatric hospital where he meets Sibel, a young Turkish woman who asks him to marry her as a way to escape her family’s strict conservative traditions. Beginning as a marriage of convenience, this unlikely partnership develops into a love for one another with tragic consequences. As the principal characters, Ünel and Kekilli provide extraordinary performances ranging from utter depression to unbridled joy in this dark drama that explores the lives of immigrants who must find balance between two cultures (Klaus Ming March 2015).
