Claudette Colbert (1903 – 1996)

colbertA French-born actress, Claudette Colbert’s career as a leading lady took off in the early sound era of motion pictures, where she is best known for her work in 1930s screwball comedies. Originally a Broadway performer, Colbert starred in over sixty films, and was nominated three times for an Academy Award – winning for Best Actress in It Happened One Night (1934). In the later years of her career, she returned to the stage and was a successful television actress. Two of Colbert’s films, It Happened One Night (1934) and The Palm Beach Story (1942) appear on the 1001 List (Klaus Ming March 2015).

    I think those are the only two pictures I’ve seen her in, but they’re both great. I’m particularly partial to The Palm Beach Story, where pretty much everybody (with the possible exception of Joel McCrae) is hilarious.

      I haven’t seen her in many other films either. But she definitely held her own in both of the 1001 picks.
