Under the Skin (2013)

UK/US/Switzerland 108m, Colour
Director: Jonathan Glazer; Cast: Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy McWilliams

undertheskinUnder the skin is an unusual highly stylized, and disconcerting science-fiction film about an alien disguised as a woman who preys on single men across Scotland. Raising more questions than answers, this is a film that relies heavily on the long slow revealing shots of the naked body of Scarlett Johansson. Seen from the perspective of the alien “woman”, whose lack of emotion might be described as a reflection of her species, or misconstrued as human sadness, Under the Skin keeps us guessing what her motivations might be, and why we continue watching a film which, perhaps cleverly, leaves us in a similar dispassionate state by the credit roll (Klaus Ming April 2015).

So creepy and odd. But man, it hardly ever lost my interest. Nice review Klaus.

loved this, and it get’s under your skin. I watched many films since I saw this, and forgotten most of them already, but not this one. It stays with you.

You are right about that. it has generated a lot of love and hate. Perhaps we can re-watch when you are here for the conference?

The book is very different. Many more things are explained. No mysterious black room, none of that. There’s a lot more of the main character’s feelings and motivations. She even has a name. 🙂

This is my idea of how you make a good movie based on a book: Throw out the book and make a good movie.
