While We’re Young (2014)

US 97m, Colour
Director: Noah Baumbach; Cast: Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts, Adam Driver, Amanda Seyfried

while-were-youngA charming and witty romantic comedy about a middle-aged documentary filmmaker and his wife whose lives change when they begin hanging out with a “hipster” couple who they identify with as their younger selves. As a movie about filmmaking, While We’re Young also explores concepts of aging, technology, and nostalgia. Some of the film’s most insightful and comedic moments deal with cultural references such as when Stiller’s character remarks that he remembers when “Eye of the Tiger” was just a bad song. The film’s only misstep is the unnecessary postscript in which an unnecessary child is incorporated into the story (Klaus Ming May 2015).
