Pain & Gain (2013)

US 129m, Colour
Director: Michael Bay; Cast: Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson, Anthony Mackie, Tony Shalhoub, Ed Harris

pain_and_gainPain & Gain is a wildly inappropriate black comedy that is based on a true story of three Miami body builders whose crimes included kidnapping, torture, extortion and murder. A modern and brutal take on crime “caper” films, the subject matter of Pain and Gain is seemingly far too atrocious to laugh at, yet there are some ridiculously humorous moments in this otherwise grim story. Despite the good performances and the film’s portrayal of the “bad guys” as bumbling criminals, their comedic characterizations serve to trivialize their crimes at the expense of the victims (Klaus Ming May 2015).
