As the second big budget American remake of the long-lived Japanese franchise, Godzilla (2014) was a significantly more successful film than Roland Emmerich’s 1998 attempt. In this latest reboot, we learn that early nuclear testing was in fact an attempt to kill Godzilla. Fortunately for mankind, Godzilla survived, only to return to save humanity from other radiation-loving creatures which were accidentally awakened many years later. Though Edward’s creatures are fun to watch, his attempt to build empathy for the human characters, by separating family members amidst the mayhem, is a tired plot device which detracts from what is otherwise an entertaining monster movie (Klaus Ming May 2015).
