Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (1964)

France/West Germany 91m, Colour
Director: Jacques Demy; Cast: Catherine Deneuve, Anne Vernon, Nino Castelnuovo, Mireille Perrey, Ellen Farner, Nino Castelnuovo, Marc Michel

cherbourgThe Umbrellas of Cherbourg is a garishly colourful operatic-style melodrama about Geneviève, a young woman who falls in love with Guy, a mechanic who leaves her pregnant before going off to complete his two years of military service. Broken-hearted and at the urging of her mother, Geneviève chooses to accept the offer of a wealthy and willing suitor, leaving Guy to remake his life. Though visually attractive and often playful, the film’s mundane musical dialogue seems unintentionally laughable and regrettably unforgettable (Klaus Ming May 2015).
