Brokeback Mountain (2005)

US/Canada 134m, Colour
Director: Ang Lee; Cast: Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway, Michelle Williams

brokebackBrokeback Mountain is a tragic romance about two cowboys, Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar who develop a deep and lasting relationship which they are forced to set aside to maintain acceptable public images during the 1960s. Relegated to sporadic “fishing trips” over two decades, the film generates considerable empathy for the characters through its depiction of how their repressed feelings affected their lives. A compelling and powerful psychological exploration of their inner struggles, Brokeback Mountain is also a beautifully photographed film with an equally compelling musical score (Klaus Ming June 2015).

I’ve seen this featured in more than one “What the heck was the Academy thinking??” article (because it lost the Best Picture award to Crash).

For me it was a toss-up. Can’t say I thought either was outstanding – but both deserving of nomination.
