Gene Kelly (1912 – 1996)

Born: Eugene Curran Kelly
August 23, 1912

gene-kellyBest known for Singin’ in the Rain (1952), arguably the most popular musical of all time, Gene Kelly was an actor, choreographer, director and producer who appeared in nearly 50 feature films over 50 years. Beginning on Broadway, Kelly first appeared Busby Berkeley’s For Me and My Gal in 1942. Kelly’s athletic style of dance stood in contrast to Fred Astaire’s gentleman “top hat and tails” film personae, and helped usher in a new style of Hollywood musical. Receiving an Honorary Academy Award in 1952 for his achievements in film, Kelly appears in four movies from the 1001 list, including: On the Town (1949), An American in Paris (1951), Singin’ in the Rain (1952), Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (1967).

I once saw a clip of Kelly in a dramatic role — I have no idea the name of the film — and there was a fight scene, on a hillside, and it was great to see all his dance skills appplied to a fight. At one point one of the other guys comes for him, and Kelly does a barrel roll over the guy’s back. It was terrific.
