Gigi (1958)

US 115m, Colour
Director: Vincente Minnelli; Cast: Leslie Caron, Louis Jourdan, Maurice Chevalier, Hermione Gingold

gigiGigi is a colourful musical comedy set in Paris at the turn of the 20th century about a young would-be mistress of a wealthy gentleman who is tired of society life. Though their relationship is initially platonic, Gaston is attracted to Gigi’s carefree attitudes and manners, which eventually lead him to do the unthinkable. A charming film, with memorable songs, it is Gaston who must defy social conventions if he is to have Gigi as his bride. Comically interjecting his opinions directly to the camera is Gaston’s uncle, who in addition to thanking heaven for “little girls”, cynically suggests that marriage is not the only option for a wealthy young man (Klaus Ming June 2015).
