Dances with Wolves (1990)

US 180m, Colour Director: Kevin Costner; Cast: Kevin Costner, Mary McDonnell, Graham Greene, Rodney A. Grant

dances-with-wolvesDances with Wolves is a historical melodrama based on Michael Blake’s 1988 book of the same name. As an American civil war era western, Costner’s epic tale of a Union soldier who finds himself living among the Lakota Indians is at its best when its principal character is not providing unnecessary plot exposition through his lengthy and awkwardly spoken narration. Lauded for its use of native language, and respect for its Indian characters, it remains the story of a white ”saviour” who learns something about himself through his experience with the “other” (Klaus Ming June 2015).
