Advantageous (2015)

US 90m, Colour
Director: Jennifer Phang; Cast: Jacqueline Kim, James Urbaniak, Freya Adams, Ken Jeong, Jennifer Ehle, Samantha Kim

advantageousAdvantageous is an intelligent near future science fiction drama about a dystopian society in which economic and social advancement are restricted to a small minority of the population. Within this setting is the story of a woman who is willing to sacrifice her life to secure her daughter’s future among the elite. As an exploration of one possible future, this is also a somber and thoughtfully paced story from a feminist perspective which works without the explosions and robots found in most contemporary science-fiction fare. An extremely well-crafted low-budget production, Advantageous has the feel of a classic science fiction novel and serves as a reminder of what good  storytelling can accomplish (Klaus Ming July 2015).
