A Man Escaped (1956)

France 99m, B&W
Director: Robert Bresson; Cast: François Leterrier, Charles Le Clainche, Maurice Beerblock, Roland Monod

a_man_escapedA Man Escaped is a captivating war drama set in Montluc prison where members of the French Resistance are being held by the German occupying forces during WW2. Throughout the film, we follow Fontaine, a prisoner who is planning his escape. Based on the memoirs of André Devigny, this is an intricate and suspenseful narrative-styled production that portrays the patience and courage of its main character. A seemingly simple film, with a spoiler for a title, A Man Escaped is surprisingly unpredictable and incredibly effective (Klaus Ming December 2015).
