The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)

US/Sweden 158m, Colour
Director: David Fincher; Cast: Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Christopher Plummer, Stellan Skarsgård, Steven Berkoff, Robin Wright, Yorick van Wageningen, Joely Richardson, Geraldine James

the-girl-with-the-dragon-tattoo_2011As the American adaptation of the Stieg Larsson novel of the same name, Fincher’s film closely resembles the earlier Swedish version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009). As a business proposition, the making of an English dialogue version was a financial success, and as an adaptation of the book, it is an excellent film. Like Noomi Rapace’s performance in the original, Rooney Mara is also outstanding in the role of Lisbeth, the damaged and emotionally distraught young woman whose own story would have been sufficient as the basis for an entire movie (Klaus Ming December 2015).

I thought this was okay, but it didn’t grab me. Partly because Noomi Rapace burned her way into my brain and permanently occupied the slot labeled “Salander.” And partly because, after reading the book and seeing all three Swedish movies, I folund I was kind of done with this story. It’s like when the last Star Trek movie came out — my only reaction was, “Okay, I know about Trek. Enough about that. I’m ready for something new now.”
