An Affair to Remember (1957)

US 119m, Colour
Director: Leo McCarey; Cast: Cary Grant, Deborah Kerr, Richard Denning

An_AffairA romantic comedy, An Affair to Remember is the remake of Leo McCarey’s 1939 drama about a French artist-turned Playboy and an American one-time singer who meet and fall in love aboard an ocean liner bound for New York. As each is already with someone else, they plan to test the depth of their love in six months atop the Empire State building, after each has resumed their careers and broken off their earlier relationships. A clever premise that has inspired a number of other romantic comedies, the otherwise beautifully filmed widescreen Affair suffers from too many musical numbers and an all-too abrupt and predictable conclusion (Klaus MIng January 2016).
