Straight Outta Compton (2015)

US 167m, Colour
Director: Felix Gary Gray; Cast: O’Shea Jackson, Jr., Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, Paul Giamatti, Aldis Hodge, Neil Brown, Jr., Keith Stanfield, R. Marcos Taylor

outta_comptonStraight Outta Compton is a fascinating biopic about N.W.A., their rise to stardom, and the attempts to censor their message by the threatened white establishment. Coming out of Compton California during the late 1980s, the film portrays Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and Eazy-E and others in the midst of a sociocultural and musical revolution. Gray does well to illustrate how their shared cultural experiences inspired the music and their message. Often unflattering, and brilliantly candid, Straight Outta Compton is a provocative film that reminds us that America’s fears and racial challenges have changed very little over three decades (Klaus Ming January 2016).
