Joy (2015)

US 124m, Colour
Director: David O. Russell; Cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, Edgar Ramirez, Diane Ladd, Virginia Madsen, Isabella Rossellini, Bradley Cooper

Joy_2015Joy is a comedic biographical drama about Joy Mangano, an inventor and entrepreneur known for household inventions such as the Miracle Mop and Huggable Hangers.  A struggling single mom, Joy is surrounded by mostly supportive friends and family, but must overcome numerous obstacles, not the least of which is her family. Despite the strong ensemble cast, the film’s melodramatic presentation through the grandmother’s narration feels somewhat contrived, and a lazy method of plot exposition (Klaus Ming January 2016).
