45 Years (2015)

UK 85m, Colour
Director: Andrew Haigh; Cast: Charlotte Rampling, Tom Courtenay, Geraldine James, Dolly Wells

45-years45 Years is a melancholy drama about Kate and Geoff, an outwardly happy couple who are about to celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary. With a week to go before the party, news arrives about Geoff’s first “wife”, who was killed in a mountain climbing accident some 50 years earlier. In learning that Geoff has never really come to terms his loss, Kate questions the underpinnings of their own relationship, casting a shadow over the past 45 years. A simple story, this is also a commentary on old-fashioned British manners which precluded honest communication, even between a loving husband and wife (Klaus Ming January 2016).
