If you have been reading Silent Film Musings, you’ll be well aware of the educational value of moving pictures, but you may not know that they are good for your health! In the August 21st, 1915 issue of The Moving Picture World it was reported that film would be used to fight disease during the coming fall and winter. In fact, the office of Dr. S.J. Crumbine, secretary of the Kansas State Board of Health asserted that “pictures showing the sources of typhoid fever, tuberculosis, smallpox, measles and diphtheria, will be exhibited in every county” and that “Proper personal hygiene and preventive methods also will be portrayed”. It was also noted that “In an attempt to hold interest in the pictures, they have been made with a story running through each”. Good thinking, otherwise films about washing your hands might otherwise be pretty boring (Klaus Ming February 2016).
