Smultronstället (1957)

Sweden 91m, B&W
Director: Ingmar Bergman; Cast: Victor Sjöström, Bibi Andersson, Ingrid Thulin, Gunnar Björnstrand

wildstrawberriesWild Strawberries is an introspective drama about a retired professor who travels with his daughter-in-law by car from Stockholm to Lund where he is to receive an honorary degree. Essentially a road movie, Professor Isak Borg meets people along the way who trigger a series of dreams which revive memories of his youth and force him to contemplate his own death. Recognizing much of himself in his aged and cold-hearted mother, Isak attempts to make peace with his family and himself in this classic character study (Klaus MIng February 2016).
