The Killer (1989)

Hong Kong, 110m, Colour
Director: John Woo; Cast: Chow Yun-fat, Danny Lee, Sally Yeh, Chu Kong, Kenneth Tsang, Shing Fui-On

The Killer 1989The Killer is an over the top action thriller about a hired assassin with a heart. Accidentally blinding an innocent bystander, Ah Jong feels obligated to perform one last job to pay for an operation to restore the woman’s sight. Playing cat and mouse with the police, Ah Jong and the detective who is pursuing him come to an understanding when attacked by the Triad. Eventually becoming a buddy movie, and increasingly melodramatic, The Killer is nevertheless an important film in establishing Woo’s cinematic style which would influence the likes of Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez and Luc Besson (Klaus Ming February 2016).
