Granddad (1913)

US 28m, B&W, Silent
Director: Thomas H. Ince; Cast: William Desmond Taylor, Mildred Harris, Frank Borzage, J. Barney Sherry

granddad 1913A well-crafted production, Granddad is a Civil War yarn set within a family melodrama. As an unrecognized war hero, granddad leaves the family home of his own accord after his son’s new wife suggests that his drinking is a bad influence on his young granddaughter. Meanwhile, through an extended flashback, we witness granddad’s heroism during the Civil War. His actions, both then and now, further demonstrate his selfless character, and serve to reunite the family, but with tragic consequences (Klaus Ming March 2016).
