Céline et Julie vont en Bateau (1974)

France 192m, Colour
Director: Jacques Rivette; Cast: Dominique Labourier, Juliet Berto, Marie-France Pisier

celine-and-julie-go-boatingCéline and Julie Go Boating is the playful story of two women who become friends and together imagine an alternate world in which a murder mystery plays out. Eventually their real and imagined lives come together within the walls of an uninhabited mansion. Intercutting their stories, we watch Céline and Julie watch their story, comment upon its construction, and somehow bring it into their own reality. A strange and complicated film, this is a contemporary Alice in Wonderland that might be interpreted as an ode to the magic of storytelling (Klaus Ming March 2016).
