Der Amerikanische Freund (1977)

West Germany/France 127m, Colour
Director: Wim Wenders; Cast: Dennis Hopper, Bruno Ganz, Lisa Kreuzer, Gérard Blain , Nicholas Ray, Samuel Fuller, David Blue

The American FriendThe American Friend is a psychological thriller adapted from the Patricia Highsmith’s 1974 novel Ripley’s Game about a terminally ill man who is coerced into becoming a hitman to provide money for his wife and child. Though a relatively simple plot, the story becomes more complicated when Ripley begins to care about the ill man who he has duped. A stylish and entertaining film, Der Amerikanische Freund is a modern film noir filled with deceit, deception and wrapped in a blanket of paranoia (Klaus Ming March 2016).
