Cléo de 5 à 7 (1962)

France 90m, Colour & B&W
Director: Agnès Varda; Cast: Corinne Marchand, Antoine Bourseiller, Dominique Davray, Dorothée Blanc, Michel Legrand

cleo-from-5-to-7Cléo de 5 à 7 is the story of a beautiful young pop singer who waits for test results that she is sure will confirm a fortune-teller’s prediction – that she has cancer. With this simple plot device, Varda  uses the self-absorbed Cléo to explore ideas about life, death and morals in modern French society. The camera’s fluid movement is juxtaposed to the film’s strict real-time structure, which seem to mirror Cléo’s shifting emotions and fears (Klaus Ming March 2016).
