Transcendence (2014)

US/China 119m, Colour
Director: Wally Pfister; Cast: Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall, Paul Bettany, Kate Mara, Cillian Murphy, Cole Hauser, Morgan Freeman

transcendenceTranscendence is one of a number of recent science fiction films that explore the possibilities of Artificial Intelligence, however, it fails to bring much of anything new to the screen. As a scientist who is uploaded to his own computer, Depp expands his programming to better the world, while anti-AI terrorists join forces with the authorities to bring him down. Attempting to be both entertaining and thought-provoking, the film’s greatest flaw is that it treads too far into the action genre, and as a result, falls short on the philosophical debate (Klaus Ming March 2016).
