Chungking Express (1994)

Hong Kong 98m, Colour
Director: Wong Kar-wai; Cast: Brigitte Lin, Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, Faye Wong, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Valerie Chow

chungking_expressChungking Express is a stylish and whimsical drama that unfolds from a take-out restaurant, where two separate but thematically-related stories about love and loneliness unfold. In each case, a different police officer is at the center of simple but unusual stories which rely on chance meetings and unlikely relationships. Kar-wai’s ability to create a sense of melancholy and loneliness in his characters who inhabit a densely populated city is an obvious influence on Coppola’s Lost in Translation (2003), which borrows heavily from Chungking Express (Klaus Ming March 2016).
