The Mermaid (2016)

The Mermaid (2016)
China/Hong Kong 94m, Color/3D
Director: Stephen Chow; Cast: Deng Chao, Show Luo, Zhang Yuqi, Lin Yun

mermaid2016The highest grossing film in China to-date, The Mermaid is a science fiction romantic musical comedy with an environmental message. As with Chow’s previous films, the Mermaid finds itself crosscutting many genres, though is decidedly sentimental. At the heart of this simple story is a beautiful young mermaid who inadvertently falls in love with a rich businessman who is killing the oceans for profit. An absurdly fun movie with a ton of special effects, it is unlikely to gain much critical acclaim, but will not disappoint anyone who enjoyed Chow’s other wonderfully imaginative films (Klaus Ming March 2016).
