The Unbelievable Truth (1989)

US 90m, Colour
Director: Hal Hartley; Cast: Adrienne Shelly, Robert Burke, Christopher Cooke, Julia McNeal, Katherine Mayfield, Gary Sauer, Mark Bailey, David Healy, Matt Malloy, Edie Falco, Paul Schultze, Bill Sage

The Unbelieavable Truth 1989A surreal soap opera styled comedy, The Unbelievable Truth is about an obsessive teenager who is convinced that nuclear holocaust is inevitable, until she meets a mysterious ex-con who has just started working as a mechanic for her father. Notable for Burke’s deadpan performance as Josh, the convicted murderer who “seems like a nice man”, The Unbelievable Truth is an intriguing film filled with hilariously wry dialogue that marked the beginning of Hartley’s quirky style as a filmmaker (Klaus Ming March 2016).
