Daddy-Long-Legs (1919)

US 85m, B&W, Silent
Director: Marshall Neilan; Cast: Mary Pickford, Milla Davenport, Miss Percy Haswell, Fay Lemport, Mahlon Hamilton, Lillian Langdon, Betty Bouton. Audrey Chapman, Marshall A. Neilan

Daddy-Long-Legs 1919Daddy Long Legs is a comedic melodrama about a rebellious orphan girl who receives a college scholarship from an unknown benefactor. Nicknamed Daddy Long legs, Judy comes to know this mysterious figure only through their written correspondence, until he eventually reveals his identity in the final scene. A heartfelt story, there are numerous comedic moments, which are largely found while Judy is living as a child in the orphanage. Playing both a rebellious twelve-year-old girl, and a college student, Pickford is marvelous. A fairy tale of sorts, the film’s deceptively simple plot contains commentary not only on the nature of orphan life, but on class differences and the importance of family (Klaus Ming March 2016).
