Tongues Untied (1991)

US 55m, Colour
Director: Marlon Riggs; Cast: Brian Freeman, Essex Hemphill

tongues_untiedTongues untied is a sociocultural critique of racism and prejudices surrounding black gay identity in the United States. In combining performance art, music, personal accounts and documentary footage, Riggs has fashioned a surprisingly comedic, yet powerful message intended to “shatter the nation’s brutalizing silence on matters of sexual and racial difference,” while simultaneously introducing the white heterosexual population to the “Institute of Snap!thology” (Klaus Ming April 2016).
