Japan 119m, Colour
Director: Yasujirō Ozu; Cast: Ganjiro Nakamura, Machiko Kyō, Ayako Wakao, Hiroshi Kawaguchi, Haruko Sugimura

ukigusaSet in a picturesque seaside village during the height of a hot summer, Floating Weeds is a contemplative drama about the head of a travelling theatre company who, after twelve years, reunites with his former mistress and their son. Jealous after learning about his illegitimate family, his current mistress attempts to seek revenge with unforeseen consequences. A beautifully filmed production, Ukigusa benefits from exquisite art direction, costuming and production design which is captured by Ozu from low angled medium shots in which his ensemble of actors are perfectly framed (Klaus Ming April 2016).
