Set in 18th century Spain, The Saragossa Manuscript is based on Jan Potocki’s 1815 novel Manuscrit trouvé à Saragosse which contains a labyrinth of interwoven stories read from a manuscript that is found during the Napoleonic Wars. These stories involve and revolve around Alphonse van Worden, a Walloon Guard who is visited by malevolent spirits, stumbles into the Spanish Inquisition, and meets a host of unusual folk who relate their own stories to him. A captivating self-referential comically surreal film, The Saragossa Manuscript is a brilliantly stylized production that looks to have been an influence on a number of creative directors such as Bunuel, Polanski and Gilliam (Klaus Ming April 2016).
