The Spider’s Stratagem is a story of the son of an anti-fascist hero who attempts to discover the truth about his father’s assassination. Moving between 1936 and the present, we see the events that lead up to the father’s death, and discover that the real purpose of the film is to explore the hero’s manufactured identity, which we learn is more important than the truth. Beautifully filmed, Bertolucci’s camera slowly pans and leisurely lingers in medium length shots, creating dreamlike visuals for a story that effortlessly drifts between the past and present (Klaus Ming April 2016).
