Terms of Endearment (1983)

US 132m, Colour
Director: James L. Brooks; Cast: Shirley MacLaine, Debra Winger, Jack Nicholson, Danny DeVito, Jeff Daniels, John Lithgow

terms-of-endearmentA comedic drama turned tragic melodrama, Terms of Endearment is the story of Aurora and Emma, a mother and daughter whose relationship is strained after the daughter marries a man that she does not approve. This is an emotionally manipulative film with unlikable characters who spend a lot of time talking on the telephone. Following their rather unremarkable relationship over a thirty year period, they eventually are brought together by way of a terminal disease in this contrived and overrated Oscar winner (Klaus Ming April 2016).

Yeah, I hated this. I think it’s a very well-made movie for a certain sort of person, but I am not that sort of person. Manipulative and falsely uplifting, and not one I plan on ever spending time with again.

I’d not seen this movie until now. I didn’t know much about the film, other than it had been a success at the Oscars. I was surprised at how much I didn’t like it.
